“Faith and fear both require you to believe in something you cannot see. Choose wisely which one you feed.” – Unknown
Faith and fear are both acts of belief one in hope and the other in disaster both require trust in the Unseen the difference. Faith leads to peace while fear feeds uncertainty the choice is ours. Whether you are working on faith or fear, you are walking in the dark, you are walking on the faith that something is going to happen, although it has not happened yet.
In today’s reflection, written on a Sunday —a day I consider to be very spiritual —I will share with you my experiences with faith and fear. Sunday's often bring me a lot of clarity and ironically fears sometimes the very source of the lessons I learn.
I'm going to be vulnerable right now: I have been scared many times in my life. Fear has had a way of infiltrating my thoughts controlling my actions and clouding my heart for too long I didn't realize that the same energy I was giving to fear and allowing it to take root in my mind and direct my life could have been poured into faith instead, faith is trusting God letting go and allowing his guidance to carry you through life's hardships.
When I was younger, I would let fear take over for far too long before I would finally give in to faith. It was not until I have grown wiser and more experienced and have established a stronger bond with God that I was able to tell fear from my heart. I finally understood that the way to counter fear was not to prevent it or to control it, but to trust. Faith. Surrender.
You may be thinking, “How do I work through fear and have faith? How can I rely on God when the world is crashing around me?” The fact is that this is not a one time solution. As human beings we face internal struggles daily.
The battle between the flesh and the spirit. Fear and doubt will arise again and again the key is learning to respond differently each time that they appear.
Do not try to hide the fear that you have and why you have it. Take stock of the fears that haunt you most. See what are the fears that bother you the most and make you wonder: What am I so scared of? What would I do if this fear became real? Quite helpfully, people tend to overemphasize the negative, making the situation look worse than it actually is. Or we worry about the what-ifs that never happen. When you break fear down, you can see that it is just a thought, and not the whole truth.
Once you have identified your fears, hand them over to God. During prayer, speak your fears out loud, meditate on letting go of them, or even write them down and tear them up and set them on fire. Whatever way you prefer, make it a motion of a giving way. For instance, during prayer you could pray; “O God, in your holy spirit, I ask you to come into my heart and lead me. Remove from me these fears, doubts and anxieties that oppress me. I leave them with you and I trust that you will lead me to the right path.• Then, sit in silence for a few minutes. Let everything come out, the tears, the thoughts. It is the process of releasing. Trust that by handing over these burdens to God, you are no longer shouldering them by yourself.
Whenever fear attempts to return, tell yourself, “I have let this go. God is in charge.” This is a good way to help desensitize yourself from fear and repeat this to yourself many times throughout the day. Every time doubt comes into your head, remember the words of God. You are safe. You are being protected.
You are protected. Your circumstances are being taken care of by God as long as you are doing what you are called to do. Slowly, this will become second nature to you.
Shaping a firmer basis of Faith You may be thinking: “How do I have more faith, especially when it seems that everything is going wrong” The truth is, faith is a work. It is not always something that is gained easily or naturally. Even those with very good relationships with God will have moments when they doubt. That’s the human nature. The key is not to allow adversity to discourage you and keep you from seeking God’s direction. How to Cultivate Faith:
Faith is a journey not a destination releasing fear and cultivating a deeper trust in God takes time and intentional effort remember you are worthy of overcoming fear and building stronger faith you deserve the peace that comes from trusting in God's plan even when you can't see it clearly let this be your mantra.
I trust God even when I don't understand I let go of fear and welcome faith into my heart. As you practice these steps daily your faith will grow and fear will lose its grip on you. You will walk more confidently in God's light.
